THE BAG LADIES
How do you know when it’s time to leave a job…ah, I can share a good one!
Picture it, 1998 in a hustling bustling 24-hour call center with tons of great people watching. This was a fantastic experience that could fill volumes of journals. Working at the time in a real estate office as a receptionist and thinking I wanted to get my license. One of my most favorite and respected agents had a heart to heart with me. She explained the business, the independent contractor status and told me that I needed a secure job with health care benefits for my daughter and I. The next day she brought me an application that that changed the trajectory of my path…for the better. This was a fascinating phase of my career with this company. This place was filled with complex relationships, power trips and awesome people watching. Oh, the cast of characters! I digress from today’s THE JOKE IS ON ME!…so, how do you know when it’s time to leave a job?
I viewed this new opportunity as a way to create a career, so taking the $5.50 per hour opening position was what I needed to do…as I grew into the role, sought out department changes, temporary assignments and promotions…I started to observe a quirky trend. Sure, it’s casual to bring your lunch or maybe a book to read on your breaks but this was something else quite puzzling. Oh, and way before smart phones were invented! People would shuffle in the door, shifting their bags to free their hands to punch in, then make their way to a free station. In addition to trying to get into the doors carrying all of this stuff, they had to trek across a sizable parking lot too. They would bring not one bag, not two bags but sometimes many bags full of stuff to “work”. What? Pillows, slippers, knitting projects, groceries…you name it I saw it…in bags. I realized that these folks were not of the same mindset-they were “life timers” up in here…in this building and very content with their role. That’s okay, just not for me.That’s when I knew then, it was time for my E-X-I-T!
Hilarious and all true…
What are the signs for you, what do you need to see or experience to help propel you to the next opportunity in your growth? There are many more layers of this journey we will break down but for this Sunday’s laugh…that’s enough for today!
