Serendipitous Encounters
One of my favorite words is serendipity…Merriam-Webster defines it: phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for or an instance of.It’s a whimsical, promising word that evokes shimmering fairy dust sprinkles over head when it comes to mind. Can you see it too? Over my own Silhouette of Success journey that there have been many moments the that fit this very definition. I’d have to say that since launching this podcast the serendipitous encounters seem to be more frequent…why is that? Could it be that I’m more aware, in more conversations that introduce me to underlying threads of connectivity that lead to discovery or those “Ah Ha” Moments…hmm-this is fascinating and has heighten my sense of awareness to the opportunity of exploring deeper. Recently I was invited to visit one of the most treasured, magical storybook-esk signature properties not only in the area but I’d say the nation. In my professional life, I have been a part of extraordinary custom builds, toured the creme da le crème of properties in prestigious zip codes, elite gated communities and toasted champagne a top the most exclusive desired rooftops in New York City. Yes, the skylines are breathtaking, just like in the movies…but I would place my visit up against any of them.
Why?
…as Truvy (Dolly Parton’s character in Steel Magnolias said…”and I think there’s a story
there…and, yes there is!
So, here is the story…I met a wonderful who has quickly become a sincere favorite and hopefully a new friend! She and I seem to fire on some of the same cylinders when it comes to connections, community and just trading sparks to keep igniting awesomeness. I shared a project I am working on to get her advice, we brainstormed a little but then on dot led to the next dot and I found myself invited to meet an extraordinary woman for a tour of her famous home! I’m not easily impressed or dazzled with celebrities, fame or household names, but this upcoming visit had me in giddy butterfly tummy knots. I’m a researcher, I am at my best when I have prepared as much as possible…this has been a learned skill, don’t look at my high school report card! This time I cannot tell you why, I don’t have any explanation, but I didn’t research anything before arriving 30 minutes early! Ugh, what was I thinking…or not thinking? I was parked down the street and then began to look lightly into the history of the property…then a call came in that I needed to take…so no true information was gleaned before the meeting.
Driving up the graceful drive with ponds to both left and right, there are playful ducks, sunlight dancing of the water…taking it all in then as I’m pull up onto the terra cotta and red bricked round-a-bout I see swans, majestic white swans. The lady of the house comes out to greet me, she is absolutely lovely, warm smile instantly putting my butterflies at ease. I know this is going to be a very memorable visit. Our mutual friend arrives, and we all go inside. If I could express the enormity of the homes spectacularly intricate details in this podcast, it might take months of recording. If I could help articulate to help create the visuals in your mind to describe the labor of love and manner in which each stone, rock and brick was dismantled and reassembled in place after relocating parts of the home it would take just as long…and honestly, I have no idea of the 99% of the details because we all began enjoying each other’s company so much and finding out about each other-so I’ll have to go back again for a longer tour! I was also able to meet her husband-equally welcoming and kind…offering delicious cookies! Ah…plot twist, and this is where the orchestra would be building up the music to a heighted climactic reveal…so we toured some rooms, paused to discuss details, some historical facts and really just reveled in the beauty of the home, their journey over the years with the home and we laughed a lot. I LOVE this stuff! But…as we walked outside and into one of the last rooms for today’s tour as lost myself but then realized it was almost time for school pick up!…in one of our last exchanges she and I caught each other’s eyes and all of the sudden-I froze. SERIOUSLY froze in astonishment. I repeated their names and like a thump to the head I was putting two and two together…In our conversations, one spark ignited another, then another until we both realized that not only did we know some of the same, same of our most favorite people in our worlds but WE HAD BEEN IN THE SAME PLACE, AT THE SAME TIME months ago, exchanged nods or under the mask smiles and didn’t know each other! I could see them in my mind and exactly where they were seated. WHOA. Now keep in mind this was during the COVID pandemic (is that still going on?)…in a local but unsuspecting suburb in a small and treasured location for a pretty exclusive, private event for a preview.
What are the odds…Serendipitous that what that was?
The message to share with you today: Embrace all opportunities (healthy, legal ones of course!), remember everyone you meet and treasure those around you.
Once we begin to pay attention, magical experiences seem to find the way into our lives. Be open, be approachable, be inviting, be a volunteer, be of service…have a happy day!
