THE AMBER WEITZER PODCAST SILHOUETTES OF SUCCESS
SHARLA FARMER | EPISODE 36 | SHOW NOTES
FEATURED GUEST
Sharla has over 30 years as a hairstylist, she opened my own salon in 2015. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication at the University of Texas in Arlington in 2003 while working as a hairstylist.
In 2010 she became interested in child welfare and pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work. After graduating with an MSW in 2012 she worked in foster care/adoption as well as some medical social work over the next few years. In 2018, because of her experience with case work, she began working in Adult Education as a Career Navigator. She worked for three years at Weatherford ISD in several capacities, including ESL instructor, and facilitating a course in Entrepreneurship in the Adult Ed department.
In addition, while still working and operating her salon she was also working in Adult Ed, she and her oldest daughter launched an event childcare company. Most of their work is through a contract with the US Army, where we provide childcare at Army events for couples where one partner has just returned from deployment. It is a very unique industry and has been very lucrative and a great experience for them.
Sharla was born in Dallas, Texas raised in Euless, Texas and now lives in Weatherford, Texas with my husband Tim, a software engineering manager. She has four adult children and seven grandchildren.
CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS
Variety: A self-described “Jack-of-All-Trades”, she says that variety is the spice of life, well said Sharla! She has a multifaceted background, energy filled present and optimistic future. She isn’t one to let a few hurdles or any red tape bureaucracy get in the way of reaching a goal. Sharla is a “doer” and so many benefit from her go-getter spirit. It’s inspiring to hear Sharla talk so simply about unknown details that might hinder her progress, but it doesn’t…not in the least.
Nurture: Sharla has a true desire to serve, support and nurture. If you listen to the various occupations that she is involved in, it all speaks to a nurturing soul. She truly lights up when sharing her stories about the entrepreneur class or the ESL students. What a genuine blessing she has been gifted with; to know that so much of her “why” is to help uplifts others yet it also fills her full of joy too. That’s a win-win!
Gratitude: Sharla shares her “glass half full” outlook and attributes that to her blessed upbringing and continued ability to have a life filled with gratitude. She has a twinkle in her eye, really, she does! The pureness of her service to others extends forward but she expresses her appreciation to what helped create the women she is today, good parents, church, mentors, family and friends. She talks about how adversity helps build one’s character and the resiliency of the ability or opportunities that we can develop if we choose. Many have experienced significant adversity, some very close to her heart. The praiseworthy choice to move forward stronger was noted by Sharla when she mentions her daughter’s loss. Sharla indeed lives a life full of grace and gratitude for all to see.
