THE AMBER WEITZER PODCAST SILHOUETTES OF SUCCESS
DI HAMMILL PAGE | EPISODE 51 | SHOW NOTES
FEATURED GUEST
She taught herself self-reliance skills that led to a university post-graduate education in Criminal Psychology and teaching at college. Three children later, she had given up academia to raise her children alone and off-grid in a remote North Yorks, living in a green painted caravan in a five-acre field with no heating, restroom, or running hot water-she and her kids lived very simply using what was around them. Di Hammill Page founded Wild Harvest around sixteen years ago with the making and selling wares and educational courses. She is a qualified Adult Ed. tutor, Permaculture Designer, Natural beekeeper, Archery GB instructor, Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, Survival Medic trained and so much more! Di is now seen as one of the country’s leading experts in simple, natural lifestyle and self-reliance and is often asked to comment in the media or speak at National shows about various aspects of her work.
CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS
Self-Reliance: Di shares with us that she was raised by her Grandfather (who she adored!) mostly and her father. She shares how she has carved her own way in life to build what she has today! Di shares how she created and grew her company to teach, educate, train and pass on self-reliance skills to all who are ready to engage. Her company Wild Harvest offers in person courses, hikes, workshops and glamping in tipi’s plus online workshops and courses. The mission is to empower you to you to provide for yourself and your family by using the natural resources around you to gather plants for food, toiletries and medicines…everything we need Mother Nature provides. Di wants to help connect women to the natural resources ability to be independent by having self-reliance skills.
Perseverance: Di talks about her Tipi sites and glamping, but it’s not just about the accommodations but fundamental education. Di shared a profound message in that everything you want to achieve requires effort, she worked very hard to create, built and achieve, she doesn’t believe in manifesting. She works long days…18 long hours and talks about…how the business sustained in the lean times by hard work and a bit of poverty! Of course, it was eventually rewarded, thankfully. She believed that women needed the opportunity to be connected to the skills. She sells out of courses with every launch. Di believes that self-reliance is in our DNA, we just need to reconnect with the skills.
Industrious: She talks about two key points in her business; the first was when she was 12 years into her Tipi business and offering residential courses and put up some Tipi’s since they were literally camping in her garden, but the neighbors complained to the Camp Council. She was heartbroken and thought she was going to have to shut the whole school down! Ultimately this led to the Camp Council loving what she was doing and it allowed her to place a big sign out and while they tried to bring her down, they really made Wild Harvest stronger! The second story she shared was when she told by her Landlord that she would have to leave the farm, so she reinvented Wild Harvest to take her business on the road with women’s hiking holiday experiences to include walking the moors, foraging, archery, crafts and staying a t a different Bed & Breakfast every night. Then the pandemic hi. But the Landlord ended up changing his mind! Di says you cannot always know what might happen next, so try and future-proof your business!
